Create a Listing!Charleston, South Carolina, doesn’t reserve its southern charm just for humans. Charleston is a dog-loving town that prides itself on being exceptionally pet friendly, rolling out the welcome mat. During beautiful weather, dogs of all shapes and sizes walk around downtown Charleston with their favorite humans by their side.
There is much you and your pet can see and do in Charleston. From exploring the city to visiting the tranquil parks and stunning beaches, you will find at least a handful of activities that make your heart soar and your dog’s tail wag.
You and your pet can stay at a variety of accommodations, including vacation rentals ranging from condos to unique and quirky stays. Whether you choose a quiet oasis in the Charleston Old Country or a more lively condo closer to the downtown area, we think you and your pet will find something that suits your needs and makes you feel at home.
The first pet-friendly thing you should do in Charleston, South Carolina, is take a stroll down King Street. Charleston is known for its historic buildings and old homes, which is what people refer to when they say “Charleston charm.” Grab a leash and stroll down the residential streets, looking at homes that date back to pre-Civil War times. Many of these homes face Charleston Harbor, so you can catch a breeze as you walk by.
Once you reach the end of King Street, where the harbor meets the thoroughfare, stop at White Point Garden. This pet-friendly garden features shaded walking paths, benches, and historical cannons and mortars that nod to Charleston’s Civil War history.
White Point Garden is also a semi-off-leash park during certain times of the day. Bring your dog here from dawn to 9 am or 5 pm to 11 pm and cut the leash. This park is not enclosed, so keep a watchful eye on your furry friend as they chase squirrels over 5.7 acres.
The Battery is a few steps away from White Point Garden. It features a fortified seawall that protects the tip of the peninsula in Charleston. While it was originally intended as a defense wall, now it is lined by antebellum homes with great views of Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse and Castle Pinckney.
Moving east from The Battery lands you to Waterfront Park and Hazel Parker Playground. This area has a fenced off-leash dog run, which is perfect for your dog to run and play. Waterfront Park encompasses about 12 acres of land that stretches for half a mile along the Charles River.
The Charleston Water taxi welcomes leashed pups of all sizes. Hop aboard the taxi and travel back and forth from Charleston Harbor Marina and Patriot’s Point in Mt. Pleasant. You’ll be able to catch views of the USS Yorktown, Fort Sumter, Ravenal Bridge, and (hopefully) dolphins.
